Richard Bong State Recreation Area Trails

Richard Bong State Recreation Area Trails Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Take a long stroll through one of the area’s most popular state park retreats. Trails pass through the largest managed grassland in this corner of the state—and it’s just burgeoning with wildflowers.

This 4,515-acre state park is named for Wisconsin native and World War II flying ace, Major Richard I. Bong. Activities range from hiking and swimming to model airplane flying and hunting. The trail system collectively totals over 41 miles, and hiking trails are color coded. The park is the largest managed grassland in southeastern Wisconsin, and if you enjoy wildflowers, this is a hotspot for them. Benches are spread intermittently throughout."

"Hiking around Wolf Lake, the centerpiece of Bong State Recreation Area, offers a pleasantly varied experience. The terrain on one side of the lake is flat or lightly rolling tree-speckled prairie, while the other side gives you dense woods, steep hills, and plunging ravines. Facilities include a campground, picnic areas, a beach, boat launch, and a visitor center. Pick up a park map from the entrance station. Hiking is not allowed on this trail when there is enough snow on the ground for cross-country skiing." Read more

If you're looking for something fairly quick, and you're in the area, I recommend this trail. You're taken around Wolf lake where you get a wide variety of scenery changes from wooded lands to prairies. It's a nice walk/hike on mostly flat land.
