Dells of the Eau Claire River / Bluff Trails

Dells of the Eau Claire River / Bluff Trails Professional Review and Guide

"One of the most photographed small parks in Wisconsin, the Dells of the Eau Claire has the always fascinating combination of swift water tumbling over jumbled rock into a sheer-walled gorge. It is an incredibly scenic place in any season.

In winter, the waterfall flows silently inside an encasement of ice. Mounds of snow round the rough contours of massive, angular volcanic rock, and only occasional swirling open pools show that the river still flows. You have a good chance of having all this beauty to yourself in winter. Traveling clockwise on the two-way trails, you first cross a foot-bridge over a small dam for a fine view of the frozen rapids downstream. Turning west, the trail winds through thick riverside hemlocks. Surface quality: Ungroomed, snowshoer and hiker packed. Fees: yes."
