Marengo River / Swedish Settlement

Marengo River / Swedish Settlement Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Three overlooks and the remains of a historic Swedish settlement. This short stretch of the North Country Trail has a lot to offer. Three scenic overlooks offer a steady stream of vistas, and the remains of a Swedish settlement pull in history buffs. A pleasing hardwood forest lines the trail, and native brook trout dimple the surface of the Marengo River.

Begin your outing by walking east from Forest Road 202. A short ascent brings the trail onto a plateau, and .5 mile later, at mile 0.6, the first over-look appears just south of the trail. This rock dome offers broad views of the Marengo River valley to the southeast and a horizon of wooded hills."

This trail isn't very hard although it might be a bit much for a brand new hiker. Best time to go is in the summer and early fall. You can do it in the winter too if you have a good pair of snowshoes. There are some really nice forests and streams along the way with views of the river and good overlooks. The remains of the Swedish settlement are cool and date back to the 1800s. It's also a good geocaching spot if you enjoy that.

Hot and muggy. Bring insect repellent. A beautiful rolling walk through the woods.
