Newport State Park Professional Review and Guide
"Newport State Park, at the northern tip of Door County, is one of the quieter sections of the peninsula. Most of the human traffic is confined to the western side of the Door County peninsula where the majority of the resorts, shops, and restaurants exist. The eastern side, where Newport is located, is a world unto its own, with forests and farmlands the chief attractions. As for mountain biking at Newport, the trails are fast but uneventful. The trails explored here cover 8.75 miles and should take beginners an hour and fifteen minutes and advanced riders as little as half an hour. Other than avoiding a few roots that run across the trail, no technical maneuvers are necessary to master the course.
There are no climbs either. The winning point on this trail is the tread, which is consistently hard and smooth. On some of the longer stretches it is easy to see far enough down the trail to really open it up without fear of running down an innocent pedestrian. All the trails are wide enough to handle two-way traffic. An old, arched wood and stone gate is an interesting landmark to watch for at the head of the Hotz Trail. The entire area is set in a scenic hardwood forest that runs right to the edge of Lake Michigan. Elevation Change: There are two climbs which amount to no more than 20 feet of elevation."
