Magnolia Bluff County Park

Magnolia Bluff County Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"With a path that clambers up a craggy sandstone bluff to a sweeping view over surrounding farmland, this scenic hike also offers some good exercise as you head up the steep slope. There are two overlooks, one at both the east and west ends of the bluff, with clear, unobstructed sight lines.

The park, less than an hour outside of Madison, is popular with horseback riders as well as hikers, with an equestrian-designated parking lot where the park road reaches the top of the bluff. The paths move through woods thick with trees that climb both sides of the bluff. There may not be many magnolia trees, but there are plenty of oaks and other species all along the hike."

"Trek around and to the top of an exposed rocky bluff for a fantastic view of the surrounding countryside, see some rare plants, and explore hardwood forest. Primarily consisting of sandstone, Magnolia Bluff exists as it does today thanks to a top layer of limestone that has slowed its erosion over eons. One can still see the exposed sandstone layers from the trail around the base of the bluff. But at the top is a view from the exposed rock at the western end of the hill, perfect for sunsets and a vista that extends all the way into Green County." Read more
