Pepin County Challenge

Pepin County Challenge Professional Review and Guide

"One of the smaller counties in Wisconsin, Pepin is a rider’s diamond in the rough tucked away between the bluffs and the mighty Mississippi River. This challenge starts in a community with a museum housed in the last wood-frame courthouse in Wisconsin and takes you on an exhilarating countryside tour. After crossing the Chippewa River, the route aims to the west to a town named for a stream that passes through. Here, stop at a park where you can follow the sparkling water of Arkansaw Creek as it cascades over the rocks and pools below the limestone wall.

The route then travels south between the Chippewa River and the foot of the bluffs before passing through another village on the river’s bank, once known as Shoo Fly. After winding down the valley floor you encounter your first major climb, over a ridge, before reaching the Mississippi. At the top, enjoy the twisty-turny descent to a Mississippi River town with one of the oldest names on Wisconsin maps. Here you can visit the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum. Now riding east along the Great River Road, you pass the Lower Chippewa River State Natural Area before circling back to the north. The last leg of this challenge will test your riding ability and stamina as you make your way back to Memorial Park in Durand."
