Follow a loop of the Ice Age Trail that crosses hilltop prairie and oak savanna to descend into a scenic gorge on the other side. Loops along the Ice Age Trail are somewhat few, but this one right at the edge of the city of Cross Plains can be fashioned into one with just a short distance of residential street to connect the end points. From the trailhead, the trail follows an old asphalt path up the hill beyond the gate of Hickory Hill Conservancy Park. Despite the name, you are going to see more oaks than hickory, as this park features a bit of oak savanna and a restoration project aiming to create more each year. Wildflowers are abundant throughout the hike, especially in the prairie portions.
