Sea Caves Professional Review and Guide

"A nearly 2.0-mile hike through the forest of the Apostle Islands National Lake- shore—partly on boardwalk and across a few intermittent streams—takes you to the spectacular mainland sea caves carved from the sandstone cliffs overlooking Lake Superior.

Another half mile of trail skirts the edge, granting overlooks of caves, cliffs, and crevices. A mile of shoreline east of Meyers Road offers the only opportunity to view them on the mainland, and the walk in is a minor price to pay. It is an undulating 2.0 miles, crossing several ravines."

My family and I hiked Meyers Beach in February. It was about a mile out to the beginning of the Ice Caves. What a great hike it was, walking on frozen Lake Superior. The temperature was in the high 30's. By the time we made it to the ice caves our outer layers were off or unzipped. The ice caves were beautiful. Some of them you could go into. Our total time for the hike was about four hours with pictures and snack breaks.

Totally amazing! The strenuous hike is well worth it. We hiked 4.5 miles in to a remote site at the end of the trail. The trail is unmarked along the beach, and we had a bit of trouble finding the trail again. The trail near the caves is spectacular - I loved it!

I lived in Red Cliff for a summer and did this hike many times. It can get rather crowded during July/August and May/June can harbor problems with spring bears. The views are spectacular though, particularly those of Eagle Island. I recommend hitting this trail in the morning due to the tendency to get crowded during the afternoons. If you are interested in checking out the sea caves by water check out Living Adventure Inc. They offer the best trips with a wonderful handmade lunch included.

Spectacular walk along Lake Superior in the fall when the colors are the fullest! Somewhat rigous walk and steep cliffs in some areas.
