Sand Island Circumnavigation

Sand Island Circumnavigation Professional Review and Guide

"Located about 2 miles from Little Sand Bay, Sand Island is easily accessible as either a day trip or an overnighter. The island has many interesting areas to explore by kayak, including excellent sea caves at Swallow Point, sand beaches, and a sandstone lighthouse on the northern tip.

Sand Island is the only island within the park that once had a year-round community. To learn more about the history of the island, pick up the Park Service brochure on Sand Island."

Weather made the crossing to sand out of our skill level. Too bad, we missed the sea caves as well, and everyone we spoke to while up in Bayfiled said Sand Island was beautiful. We ended up driving west an hour to paddle the Bois Brule river instead (more protected from the wind) beautiful river and a great alternative!
