South Fork Tieton - Surprise Lake Loop

South Fork Tieton - Surprise Lake Loop Professional Review and Guide

"Hike from the lush, beautiful, mid-elevation Conrad Meadows to the alpine terrain and spectacular flower displays at the headwaters of the South Fork Tieton River. The meadow is usually very lush and green in early summer, but by fall it will be grazed down by cattle and the large herd of elk that abide here.

Mornings and evenings, there is a very good chance you will see elk in the meadow. If you happen to be here in September, you may even hear the bull elk bugling. The course crosses Conrad Meadows, then enters a forest of young lodgepole pines."

Five of my grandson's and I made a one day round trip into Surprise Lake, from Conrad Meadows. The trail was in good condition, the lake and Goats Rocks were as spectacular as my memories of them. It was a long 13 mile hike, but a wonderful day for 73 year old grandma and her granson's.
