Bear Creek Mountain from Conrad Meadows

Bear Creek Mountain from Conrad Meadows Professional Review and Guide

"Climb this challenging trail from Conrad Meadows to the spectacular viewpoint at the top of Bear Creek Mountain. Early in the season Bear Creek Mountain Lookout Trail usually has some snowfields to cross. Some years they persist well into August. Keep your eyes open for large wildlife all along this route; elk are common.

From the Conrad Meadows trailhead, at 4,040 feet elevation, climb the Bear Creek Mountain Trail northwest through the small lodgepole pines. As you climb, open areas offer views of broad, green Conrad Meadows. The route crosses the Goat Rocks Wilderness boundary 0.5 mile from the trailhead. The trail is braided in spots above the wilderness boundary as it climbs a rocky ridgeline. A mile and a half into the hike, the trace makes the first of six switchbacks."

"Hike through a recent burn and ancient forest along a lonely ridge to a lofty former lookout site on the eastern edge of the Goat Rocks crest.

Marvel at snowy bookend volcanoes Mounts Adams and Rainier. And admire up close the serrated and glacier-clutching remnants of a massive ancient volcano that once rivaled Washington’s highest peaks. Via the Section 3 Lake trailhead, this hike is only 7 miles roundtrip and 1200 feet of elevation gain. But the roads getting there are extremely rough, warranting high clearance and four-wheel drive."

If you're in the mood for a great view of Mt. Adams and Rainier but don't want to hassle with the crowds this trail might be of interest to you. Also, save up your energy for the last half mile or so.
