Hike across a windy open plateau following alongside a gurgling creek, slowly descending into a deep canyon of pine groves, dogwood patches, and in springtime, a mosaic of wildflowers. Your passage to this wild and remote depression north of the Columbia Hills is via the klickitat Trail, a 31- mile long former railroad bed. Quite a contrast from the western half of the trail along the klickitat River (Hike 45), Swale Canyon’s absence of roads and houses provides a completely different hiking experience.
