This early in the season, the trail is covered in snow about 2/3 way up, poles, gators, and warm clothes are a must. The snow allows you to hike straight up the ridgeline to the tower at the top, one of the last working CCC projects, and we were fortunate to find it occupied and open (a rarity) to save us from the cold rain. If you hit it on a clear day, the view is absolutely amazing, you can see Sky Peak, Kendall Peak, and Red Mountain, and, of course, breath-taking Rainier. A great hike, moderate difficulty for the last one mile to the top.
