Lake James Trail

Lake James Trail Professional Review and Guide

"A long, steep climb takes you through a beautiful forest and to impressive rock formations of Yellowstone Cliffs. The trail continues over a subalpine meadow pass to the boulder-strewn meadows of Windy Gap, an opportune location for viewing the northeastern portion of Mount Rainier National Park. The hike ends at Lake James, a tranquil mountain lake that is a popular fishing destination.

From Ipsut Creek Campground follow the small connector trail south to the Wonderland Trail. The Ipsut Falls spur trail intersects to the right (west) shortly after leaving Ipsut Creek Campground. If you desire, take this spur trail to gently cascading Ipsut Falls. From the spur trail continue traveling south to the Wonderland Trail. The trail ascends very gently for the first couple of miles and crosses the silty waters of the Carbon River. Once on the east bank of the river, you will come to the Northern Loop Trail."
