Highway 12 to Interstate 90 Professional Review and Guide
"Graphic contrasts in land use separate this section into two very different segments. The southern half is largely a subalpine parkland glistening with lakes cupped in forests and meadows. Most of this backcountry lies protected within the boundaries of two wilderness areas and Mt. Rainier National Park. The northern half, on the other hand, being lower, is totally within the montane forest belt so favored by the lumber industry, and it blisters with a lot of barren earth, some of the most extensively clearcut land in the West."
