Road 4039: Solitude Professional Review and Guide
"The day was too beautiful to stay home, but in May there was too much snow in the high country to go very far. As a compromise, Pat and I headed for Barlow Pass for an easy hike to Monte Cristo, or if there was too much snow, a simple walk to the Ice Caves below Big Four. The drive was beautiful in Robe Valley and the glistening snow made Pilchuck look like a mighty mountain. The Stillaguamish was running high, as were our expectations.
However, just beyond Silverton, everything came to a screeching halt! The road was blocked with heavy equipment replacing a bridge. (Why wasn’t there a sign back at Granite Falls stating that, due to road construction, the road would be closed at Silverton until late May?) Disgusted, we turned around and headed for snow-covered Lake 22. However, at 0.2 mile upriver from Red Bridge, we went exploring the River Road, located on the north side of the river."
