Road 4030-040: Mallardy Ridge Professional Review and Guide

"There wasn’t a cloud in the sky this Saturday afternoon. We drove the Mountain Loop Highway from Granite Falls to Verlot. The parking lot at the Lake 22 trailhead was jammed, twenty cars were at the Mount Dickerman trailhead, and there were thirty at Barlow Point.

It is great to have everyone out in the mountains, but today there were too many people. We headed up Road 4030 to the Walt Bailey trail, but got stopped by a snowbank at about 3500 feet. On the way back we spotted this interesting sideroad, No. 4030-040 (not signed). This proved to be a short, interesting walk between second growth and a virgin forest and best of all we had solitude. (The views were good, but we had passed a better view at 3400 feet.) The road is passable to a jeep and maybe to anyone with a scratched-up, high-clearance car."
