Bird-watching on Vashon Island can be as easy as riding the ferry to the island from Seattle or Tacoma and simply driving around and exploring the 12-mile-long and 8-mile-wide island complex. Extensive saltwater shorelines coupled with a handful of well-placed parks offer intriguing on-island opportunities. Add the birding from the ferry on the way to the island and you’ll have one of the simplest ways to spend the day watching birds within easy reach of the Puget Sound’s urban centers. Habitats: Saltwater marsh, sandy beach, rocky beach, mixed forest. Specialty birds: Common Loon; Pelagic and Brandt’s Cormorants; Greater White-fronted Goose; Greater Scaup; Barrow’s Goldeneye; Bald Eagle; Peregrine Falcon; Black-bellied Plover; Solitary, Baird’s, and Pectoral Sandpipers; Red-necked Phalarope; Heerman’s, Bonaparte’s, Mew, Thayer’s, and Western Gulls; Common Tern; Common Murre; Pigeon Guillemot; Marbled Murrelet; Rhinoceros Auklet; Band-tailed Pigeon; Northern Pygmy-Owl; Vaux’s Swift; Anna’s and Rufous Hummingbirds; Pileated Woodpecker; Red-breasted Sapsucker; Hammond’s and Pacific-slope Flycatchers; Hutton’s Vireo; Purple Martin.
