Ginkgo Petrified Forest

Ginkgo Petrified Forest Professional Review and Guide

"Follow an easy 1.5-mile loop through a desert region of central Washington, and see one of the largest collections of ancient forest fossil remnants in the country. This short hike through Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park, in addition to being a fine leg stretcher for travelers along I–90, provides many insights into the past natural history of the region and one of the largest natural collections of petrified wood
in the country.

If you come here during summer, be sure to bring water for this hot, dry hike. From the trailhead, follow the paved path to the east, passing the display showing a map of the trail system constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s."

There are petrified tree stumps! Well, slices of stumps, but still, they're pretty cool. The short interpretive trail isn't much of a hike, but it does lead you past many petrified stumps labeled with what species of tree they are. Unfortunately, to protect the trees, they're all located inside large metal cages, so you can't get too close or see as many details as you'd like.
