This hike crosses a regional landmark: the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. The original span opened in July 1940 and, four months later, a storm sent it oscillating wildly and plunging nearly 200 feet into water, earning it the name Galloping Gertie. Today, two spans carry traffic across the Narrows, the newest span with a lane for bicyclists and hikers that is a segment of the much longer Scott Pierson Trail, offering breathtaking views of Puget Sound.
