Lightning Creek to Starvation Mountain

Lightning Creek to Starvation Mountain Professional Review and Guide

"Following the trail along the banks of beautiful Lightning Creek is simultaneously heart thumping and peaceful. This is one of the more popular routes in the Winthrop/Twisp area. The road ride that leads to the top of Starvation Mountain offers river and mountain views, and after the steep climb you’ll be rewarded with a wonderful descent. The singletrack back along Lightning Creek takes about half the time it did to ride up, allowing for an exhilarating finish.

Located about a half-hour from Winthrop is the Lightning Creek Trail, above the Methow Valley to the north. The starting point at Beaver Creek Campground is filled with tall ponderosa pines and larch trees. Singletrack leads the way up alongside Lightning Creek where intersections are well marked."

The trail description is a waste of hard earned vertical. Try the Blue Buck Trail back to Lighting Creek.

Check out Zilly's book on Mountain biking Northwest WA. You can start from the campground and ride 18 miles up--passing the lightning creek trail. From there you can decend Starvation mountain for 11 miles of single track. Lightening creek is also a great trail...making for a shorter loop at 17 total miles. A few nice stream crossings and lots of cow dung to avoid. Watch out during hunting season...!
