Seldom-visited Swan Creek Park is one of Tacoma’s bestkept secrets. This undeveloped 322-acre stretch of land runs through a canyon with a wide creek bed at its floor and a virtual jungle of native trees, ferns, and wildflowers hugging the steep hillsides. Beside the creek, native vegetation, and wildlife, the main attraction in this park is the trail, making this shady, wooded canyon an urban hiker’s paradise.
Forgotten, neglected, and once in peril for acquisition as a landfill, the canyon that makes up Swan Creek Park is one of the region’s biggest success stories, and one with a very happy ending—for hikers. Grassroots conservation groups rescued the land and have since dedicated themselves to cleaning up the park and restoring both the creek and forest habitats. Hikers should stay tuned to developments in this park.
