The community of Stehekin lies nestled at the base of ice-clad mountains at the head of 50-mile-long Lake Chelan. It has the faintly exotic appearance of being out of time with the rest of the world. And indeed it is: Accessible only by boat or airplane, Stehekin is the kind of place you read about in books. The community lacks supermarkets, shopping malls, and most of the other common attributes of our hyperactive society. Even cell phones won’t connect to the outer world. Stehekin Valley is not an area of endless skiing opportunities; the mountains are too steep and avalanche prone to be tackled by anyone other than an expert mountaineer skier. However, for skiing at a leisurely pace, there are two groomed areas that vie for your attention. This tour describes the valley area near town. Avalanche potential: none
