Palouse Falls

Palouse Falls Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The lower Palouse River offers a mix of flatwater and running water leading into one of the region’s most spectacular canoeable gorges. Basalt cliffs gradually close in as paddlers struggle upstream to the stunning amphitheater of Palouse Falls. Paddlers will have to use ropes to track their boats in several sections. Poison ivy lines the banks in places, and rattlesnakes are always a possibility. The reward is paddling into the pool and looking up 198 feet to where the huge column of water plunges off the rimrock.

Careful canoeists can frolic in the spray, but there is never enough room to paddle safely behind the falls. Indeed, in high spring flows, the falls create big waves, wind, and a vortex that wants to draw boats into the deathtrap. Enjoy this powerful sight from a safe distance."
