Liberty Lake Loop

Liberty Lake Loop Professional Review and Guide

"Ten miles east of downtown Spokane, just west of the Idaho line. Circumnavigating Liberty Lake is the point of this ride; this is perhaps the easiest way around the lake (on two wheels or less).

Starting at the county park at the lake's southern end, you're in pristine meadow and woods. A rolling meadow trail is unsurpassed for surface and scenic enjoyment, rising and fading gracefully into the development that is now Liberty Lake, Washington. The trail has 4.7 miles pavement, 1.5 miles gravel/dirt road, and 1.3 miles singletrack."

The trail through the forest is really nice and pretty easy until the climb out at the end (I may have taken the wrong trail). Make sure you have the guide with you, I didn't and there were a few times were I had to guess which path to take and I may have chosen the wrong one out of the forest. Oh and watch out for horse crap, there's a ton of it all throughout the trail except for the last bit. Only other thing is watch for cars coming back into the park. there's no shoulder and I had a couple of close calls around the corners. Mom's dealing with screaming kids while going up a windy road ftw. Fun trail and some nice forest to enjoy on the way.

I decided to take advantage of the mild winter this year and get a jump start on the season by taking this ride. Right off the bat, the trails are very well marked and well maintained. Going in February though did pose some problems. Snow melt flooded the lower portions of the trail. Bring mud gear in Feb! Nevertheless, the trail was a lot of fun to ride. The trail guide was very helpful for going through it the first time. Essentially, you stay to the right the entire time. There was a lot of wildlife along the trail too, which made it even more enjoyable. After a steep gravel climb, you enter residential. This is where the trip looses a little bit of appeal. Eventually you get to the main roads and take this road all the way back to the parking lot. This portion is steep as well at times, though it was nice to end by bombing down Zephyr road to the parking lot. Overall, it was a great ride to start the season. I'll look forward to completing this track again sans 2 ft of mud.
