Dalles Mountain Trail

Dalles Mountain Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Horsethief Lake State Park, also known as Dalles Mountain Ranch State Park, offers great experiences in the desert country east of the Columbia River Gorge. Unique views of the eastern gate of the Columbia River Gorge can be enjoyed here, but more importantly, you can immerse yourself into the natural desert world that Lewis and Clark encountered as they passed through along the Columbia.

This route leads hikers past a picturesque waterfall, and through fields of wildflowers, including white biscuit root, yellow bells, salt-and-pepper lomatium, chokecherry and serviceberry, and mock orange."

Trail is definetely no longer able to be followed without navigation skills. Map provided is incorrrect. Waterfall was nice and is less than .5miles from trail head, a beautiful hike but not an accurate trail guide
Maybe my wife and I are too used to well defined or marked trails, but we couldn't find the trail after spending hours combing the countryside. We ended up hiking along Eight-Mile Creek a few miles before stopping to admire the creek. I will say that the countryside is beautiful, with many small flowers beginning to bloom. Eight-Mile creek is quite beautiful and we were hypnotized by its small rapid current that cascaded over and around the rocky landscape. Good luck to anyone who can find the real trail, as orange flags dotted the landscape in no particular pattern.
This is a wonderful trail in the spring. I went in mid-May and there were flowers up everywhere. The trail is pretty well defined for about the first three-quarters. Pay attention to the landmarks mentioned in the write up and you'll be fine. First you'll go off the road and have to jump a fence. After you cross the stream head up the hill. When I was on the trail some one had mowed and placed flags. This helped for a time, but at one point I had to bushwack to the Dalles Mountain Road. Also if you want to get to the peak you'll need to jump a few fences. There is no established trail to the top. The final accent is pretty steap. I made my own switchbacks and that helped. Try no to squish too many flowers!
