Columbia River: Skamokawa to Cathlamet Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The lower Columbia River valley is full of history, much of which is reflected in the names of the communities along the banks of the river. Many names are derived from Native American languages.

For instance, Skamokawa is a Chinook word meaning “smoke over the water,” a reference to the foggy climate, while Cathlamet is named for a tribe of Chinook Indians. Both towns are located in tiny Wahkiakum County, named for an Indian village that was once located near the present site of Cathlamet."
