A magical land of extinct volcanic craters and pastoral lawns along a high plateau dotted by over a hundred subalpine lakes, the 20,600-acre Indian Heaven Wilderness is indeed a heavenly place. Long a gathering ground for area tribes who came to gather huckleberries and fi sh, to tan hides, dry meats, race horses, and play games, the area still retains its signifi cance to these First Peoples. Today the land has become a popular gathering place for hikers, with its many trails, gentle topography, and enticing lakes and berry fi elds. But be warned that this heaven can be a mosquito hell for much of the hiking season.
