Round Mountain Trail

Round Mountain Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This is a steep but short trail with incredible views and great wildlife viewing opportunities. The trail climbs relentlessly from the first step, first through cool forest and then finally, near the top, in open meadow.

There are no views until the trail nears the summit, but deer and elk browse in the forest around the trail, and black bears frequent the area as well. An impressive array of birds is also found in this area; from cedar waxwings to golden eagles, the forests— and the skies above them—are filled with feathered beasts."

I was scouting out some hikes in the vicinity of Clear Lake with my daughters and found this gem. Fairly short, but steep enough to give my heart a good workout and to probably discourage many casual hikers. The trail climbs steadily through the forest with some open areas with views peeking through the trees. As the trail winds around the north side of Round Mountain, there is a great view of Mt Rainier through a break in the trees. A little more climbing brings you to the top of Round Mountain, with a panoramic view down the Tieton valley to the east and of Mount Adams and the Goat Rocks to the south. On a clear day, it's a spectacular view, well worth the effort.
