Gold Creek Trail

Gold Creek Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Advanced cyclists will appreciate this demanding 18.3-mile loop. The trip begins with climbing on good gravel roads. Vistas into the snowcapped Buckhorn Wilderness get better as you gain altitude. Twelve miles of difficult climbing and screaming downhills bring you to God Creek Trail. The path begins in an area thick with rhododendrons.

This single-track includes some short, strenuous climbs, but it is mostly downhill. The trail is exciting, with twists, whoop-de-does, major root drop-offs, and cliff-like experiences. An exhilarating ride for strong, skilled cyclists. Scenery: Beautiful vistas of surrounding mountains and valleys."

I think that the directions on most trail guides are old and/or inaccurate. They all say to take FR 28 to FS 2860. The problem is that FS 2860 has been blocked, and from the look of it for several years. The only way I found to get close to the trail head is by taking 2880, (right at the Y of FS 28 and FS 2880) and following it down the hill, across the river and up the other side. The first Y you encounter is the FS 2880 and 2870, stay left at Y which keeps you on 2880. Another couple of miles you will reach another Y and if you go left it will take you back down the hill finally dumping you out in a parking area that is the trail head for 833. 833 is on the right just as you are entering the parking area. At the opposite end of the parking lot there is a gated road that appears to follow the river. My guess is that this is the end of the referenced FS 2860. I think that if you park and ride up this road you will eventually cross the river and find the actual trail head. Please keep in mind that I never did actually find the trail head after 2-plus hours of searching. Best of luck and please post a review if anyone finds the trail head or if there is a way to access this trail from 833.
