Vashon and Maury Islands

Vashon and Maury Islands Professional Review and Guide

"Ferry across to Vashon Island for a rural 40-mile workout that is one of the most scenic to be found in our region. Off the well-traveled main road, cyclists enjoy tree-lined back roads low on traffic and high on pastoral and water views.

The inevitable hill climb to start the ride is one of the most challenging of any from a ferry dock. It’s a steady 2-mile grade, after which you veer onto the island’s west side for a long spin that takes you south down most of the island. Views across Colvos Passage to the Kitsap Peninsula and the Olympics are interspersed with valleys where deer or grazing livestock can be seen. Mostly, though, the view is a predictable tunnel of Northwest evergreens that line the roads. The way south takes you past the Wax Orchards berry operation and picturesque Misty Isle Farms and its naturally raised beef. Vashon is a bounteous agricultural island, and many small farms, a few with roadside stands offering fresh veggies, can be found along its roads."
