University of Washington Campus, Seattle Professional Review and Guide

"Founded in 1861, the UW located its first campus in what is now the center of Seattle’s business district. It moved to its present location in 1895, putting it a long streetcar ride away from downtown. There were no paved streets or sewers in the area, and the campus had few buildings that could not have easily been converted into chicken sheds. The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition provided the $10 million needed to transform that rural site. Expo buildings and grounds provided a foundation for what has become one of the most picturesque campuses in the West.

Today, classrooms are located in a mix of modern and neo-Gothic buildings on 694 acres of parklike grounds adjoining Lake Washington and Portage Bay. Some 35,000 students are enrolled in more than 100 academic disciplines at 16 major schools and colleges. The UW work force numbers 17,000, and the school operates both the University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center. Special attractions: Architecturally acclaimed university campus and shopping district, Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, Henry Art Gallery."
