"“TIDE LANDS HAS RIZ!” Early Seattle real estate speculator H. H. Richardson chanted and printed that slogan to promote land sales in the then-underwater lands south of Pioneer Square. He meant these properties were rising in value, because they would eventually rise above sea level. Richardson’s prophecies proved correct when dirt from the Denny Regrade (Walk 7) and other projects turned these wetlands high, dry, and ready for industry. Later promoters christened the area SoDo, for “south of the Kingdome.” After there was no more Kingdome, the acronym’s meaning was changed to “south of downtown.” City zoning regulations, intended to preserve industrial businesses and their living-wage jobs, have mostly protected this bastion of working-class values from redevelopment. Along these wide, flat avenues you’ll see a variety of structures made for the making and storing of a variety of things.
