Camp Long is a woodland retreat inside Seattle’s city limits. This sixty-eight-acre park borders the West Seattle Golf Course and boasts miles of hiking trails, the first artificial climbing rock in North America, an environmental education center located in an old lodge, several rustic vacation rental cabins, and enough wildlife to attract hundreds of birders for an annual bird count. The creation of Camp Long began in 1937 as a WPA project designed for public use as well as a Boy Scout retreat. Its mission was to bring people close to nature, one it has achieved many times over. Before you begin your hike through Camp Long, stop at the information desk in the lodge and pick up a free park map. Although most of the trails are well marked, a park map will help you navigate the few that aren’t.
