Point of the Arches

Point of the Arches Professional Review and Guide

"A 13.4-mile one way backpack from Ozette Lake to the north end of Shi Shi Beach. This route covers a wild and beautiful stretch of coastline north of Ozette Lake. There are some steep climbs aided by fixed ropes near Will Point. The northern access to Shi Shi Beach has been reopened, so travelers to Point of the Arches can exit northward via the Shi Shi Beach hike.

This reopened northern access route has been blazed to Shi Shi Beach, which means that this historically remote backcountry area becomes crowded at times with day hikers."

Very very nice, but rains a lot. I entered via the Northern enterance, not via the trail described in this report. If you take the trail in this report, be sure you can make it and that you have a tide table. The only stream water in this area is brown (cedar water) so bring a good filter. If your filter pumps out brown water it was not as good as you thought, but the water will still be drinkable but looks like tea. Beach is beautiful, and very nice campsites. The Northern enterance is now open with a new trail, and in addition has free daytime parking. If parking overnight pay $10 to the locals to park in their yard.
The trail from Ozette Ranger Station to Cape Alava is very well maintained, and very easy and quite beautiful. It winds through an enchanting forest, passing several fallen trees. We saw a 4-point buck as we meandered back into the forest after crossing both prairies. This is a fabulous trail, and the best part is definitely the end fo the hike as you spy down upon the Flattery Rocks, sea stacks, etc. Get out and hike it!
