Point Defiance Park:Spine–Outer Loop–Inner Loop Trails Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Tacoma’s more than one-hundred-year-old Point Defiance Park not only houses a renowned zoo and aquarium, extensive gardens, a logging museum, and a living history museum at Fort Nisqually but also hundreds of acres of urban forest laced with trails. The three main trail routes are marked with geometric symbols: the Spine Trail is a circle, the Outer Loop Trail a square, and the Inner Loop a triangle. The route prescribed here takes in segments of all three trails.

At more than 700 acres, the wooded peninsula known as Point Defiance is home to one of the greatest remaining forests in North America inside an urban core. This popular park’s trail system is a major recreational hub for hikers and runners. The trail surface consists of gravel near the trailhead, but soon it becomes a dirt surface, and segments can be extremely muddy and slippery for days after a rain. Good treads and trekking poles can help you navigate the muddy trail surface."
