Mount Daniel

Mount Daniel Professional Review and Guide

"Mount Daniel ’s massive, gently sloping shoulders support acres of snow ideally suited for ski touring and snowboarding. Its main drawback is the lack of convenient access; Cle Elum River Road is snow-covered late into spring. The trick to making Mount Daniel a successful tour is to get there just when the road melts out, or to hire a snowmobile operator to give you a lift to the trailhead.

An occasional obstacle blocking the last 3 miles of road is the Scatter Creek crossing, which becomes impassable when meltwater rushing across the road is too deep to drive through. Bring a towrope, in case you get stuck. (Or, better yet, examine the situation before you commit!) This tour is a leisurely overnighter, but can be an athletic day trip. Take ice axes and crampons. Difficulties: High avalanche potential; glacier travel; routefinding required; permit/fee area."
