Refrigerator Canyon Loop

Refrigerator Canyon Loop Professional Review and Guide

"This trip samples part of a region that some conservationists want declared either a national monument or something close to a wilderness area to protect old-growth forest and roadless tracts. You will experience the closeness of the forests, particularly in beautiful Refrigerator Canyon (where temperatures tend to be at least 10 degrees cooler than the surrounding area), as well as broad vistas. Nine Mile Falls can be viewed from the road, or you can take the short hike to a viewing platform.

The massive washout of Refrigerator Canyon Road (233), which occurred during a spring flood in 1998, is an impressive sight. On narrow, high-clearance dirt-and-gravel roads. Two-track McMann Creek Road (500) is more rudimentary and rockier than the others, but still easy. The washed-out northern end of Refrigerator Canyon Road, south of Hall Creek Road (99), is impassable. Access to the canyon is from the south, via Quartz Ridge Road (2053). The hike to Nine Mile Falls is moderately strenuous."
