Kettle Crest Trail Backpacking

Kettle Crest Trail (Backpacking) Professional Review and Guide

"The Kettle River Range is unlike the rugged mountains familiar to hikers in other parts of Washington. Here there are no icy crags, cirque lakes, or glaciers. This range has a friendlier look with rounded summits, open forests, and large ridgetop meadows that provide expansive views to the nearby forested hills and valleys.

The weather is better here and the trails generally are hikeable much sooner than in mountains further west. These and other attributes give the Kettle River Range an appeal that will draw you back time and again."

I solo backpacked the first 8.8 miles on a Tuesday/Wed, mid July 2006, from the Sherman Pass trailhead to the 2nd official campsite, at the junction with Jungle Hill Trail #16. I camped overnight in this excellent campsite. Beautiful place, great views, this campsite is right next to a large, amazing, meadow, which also has many mosquitoes. The 1st campsite, near Columbia Mountain is small and nice but also had many mosquitoes. I'm guessing that these come from the springs near both campsites. Water is scarce and so are campsites, but at least there was some spring water, complete with plastic pipe systems, available near both the campsites I visited. I noticed several unoffical campsites along the trail, one of them right in the middle of the trail! Did not see another human the entire 21 hours I was there, very quiet! The trail itself is pretty good. There are spots where you do much switchbacking up or down, but it's not bad. There seemed to have been much trail maintanance, so props to those who maintain Kettle Crest, a job well done and much appreciated. Just a few more campsites would really improve Kettle Crest Trail.
