Tongue Mountain Trail

Tongue Mountain Trail Professional Review and Guide

"A short, steep hike up Tongue Mountain, a small extinct volcano on the edge of the Dark Divide, leads to breathtaking views. Mount Rainier, Mount Adams and Mount St. Helens look close enough to touch. The Cispus River winds through the valley of the Dark Divide directly below.

A forest fire devastated Juniper Ridge in 1918, leaving silver snags along its length. This mountaintop held a lookout from 1934 to 1948, built in response to that fire. The rock in this area is unstable, and children should not go beyond the trail. Mountain bikers also use the area. But views and the satisfaction of reaching the top where the building once stood are compensation enough."
