Plains of Abraham Loop

Plains of Abraham Loop Professional Review and Guide

"The route travels along the east side of Windy Ridge through the severely blasted forest. Penstemon and paintbrush color the slopes between the alder and huckleberry bushes. Mount Adams is in view to the east across Smith Creek Canyon. In late July the flowers along this ridge are unrivaled. Penstemon and paintbrush nearly cover the slopes. After crossing the sixth draw the Plains of Abraham come into view ahead. The tread descends, then crosses a wash as it nears the plains.

You will make a switchback as you climb out of the wash onto the desert-like plains. Few plants can withstand the rigors of this pumice desert, but a few penstemons seem to prosper and bloom. Ape and Nelson Glaciers hang to the mountain slopes ahead and above. As you get closer to the base of the mountain the path bears slightly to the right and crosses a couple of washes. This section of the Loowit Trail is marked with large cairns. In the washes the trail is rough and vague in spots."
