High Camp via Killen Creek Trail

High Camp via Killen Creek Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Hike to a windswept plateau high on the northwest slope of Mount Adams. Before August the upper mile of this route may be at least partially snow covered some years. There are several campsites available in the groves of stunted trees at High Camp.

Gentian thrives in the wet meadows along the stream, and on drier slopes paintbrush, dwarf lupine, heather, and juniper cover the ground. Note that the stream generally has more water in the afternoon because of snowmelt. Watch for the many mountain goats that inhabit the area; you may notice their shed hair clinging to the stunted trees around High Camp."

Spectacular views highlighted this leg of our hike. I burned up most of a roll of film on the scenery of Adams, Rainier and Goat Rocks. We turned onto the PCT at the junction (never made it to High Camp)and headed towards Muddy Meadows Trail. The PCT leg was also remarkably scenic and boasted two, large waterfalls. Descending the MM Trail was a disappointment due to thick timber obstructing any views for most of the way. However, the MM Basin area opened up for more rich photo opps with Mt Adams in glorious alpen glow. I'd do it all again in a second!
