Ghost Lake

Ghost Lake Professional Review and Guide

"The pumice-covered Boundary Trail climbs through small timber intermingled with paintbrush and penstemon. Three hundred yards from the trailhead you will enter old growth forest of fir and hemlock. Mount St. Helens looms to the southwest through the trees. The tread crosses a small stream 1 mile from the trailhead. It then crosses a larger stream at the base of a stepped waterfall.

Continue the traverse of this steep-sided hill, crossing a couple more small streams. In an opening on the slope, shooting stars, larkspur and paintbrush grow in profusion. Watch for a view of Mount Adams to your left. The trail enters The Blast Zone 2 miles from Bear Meadows. The standing dead snags attest to the heat and power of the 1980 eruption. Huckleberries are plentiful here in August. You will make five switchbacks as you descend to a broken wooden bridge over a usually dry stream."
