French Butte

French Butte Professional Review and Guide

"You will meander along the crest of a ridge that rises to an elevation of about 5,000 feet, providing spectacular views of Mt. Rainier, Mount St. Helens, Mt. Adams, even Oregon’s Mt. Hood. The ridge is also a great place to pick huckleberries (peak season is mid-August to mid-September). Burley Mountain Lookout (5,304 feet) has a stunning view of the region. Built in 1934, it is one of only three functioning fire lookouts remaining in this national forest.

Iron Creek Picnic Area is home to magnificent old-growth Douglas firs. On road surfaces that range from asphalt to gravel and dirt. Some segments are rocky, steep and narrow, with little room to pass and many blind curves. High clearance is required, and 4WD may be required as well. Almost 11 miles of the road at the north end are paved."
