Colonel Bob Peak

Colonel Bob Peak Professional Review and Guide

"Starting near sea level (trailhead elevation is a mere 230 feet), the Colonel Bob Trail climbs endlessly through deep old-growth forests, small forest clearings, and alpine meadows to provide stunning views of the Quinault Lake basin from the 4510-foot summit of Colonel Bob Peak."

Numerous logs across the trail make this a very tricky hike. It was a little like bouldering.

Backpacked in and stayed at Moonshine Flats overnight. They mean it on this one when they say strenuous, it's all uphill for 7 miles to the peak, and was rough on our muscles and knees both directions. There are at least 20 trees down over the trail that you should be prepared to climb over and under. Beautiful forests though, a few great views, and enough water to purify as you go. Heard elk, saw grouse and lots of slugs. The view from the top of Colonel Bob Peak was well worth it- 360 degrees of Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, Lake Quinalt, the ocean, and the Olympics.
