Royal Basin

Royal Basin Professional Review and Guide

"A more than suitable playground for even the most finicky monarch, Royal Basin is a multileveled alpine bowl that sits directly beneath some of the tallest, most rugged, and most beautiful peaks in the Olympic Mountains. The outstanding scenery here has drawn legions of admirers for decades, so don’t expect to be alone. To protect this area from overuse, the National Park Service requires a limited-use permit for all overnight travel into the basin between May 1 and September 30.

These permits are available by reservation only (no firstcome, first-serve permits are set aside) and must be obtained from the Wilderness Information Center in Port Angeles. To apply for a reservation, visit the park’s website (, download a Wilderness Camping Permit Reservation Request form, fill out your information and planned itinerary, include your payment, and then send it by snail mail or fax (360-565-3108) to the Wilderness Information Center. Well-conditioned day hikers, however, can reach this beautiful goal without any permit hassles and can travel on the spur of the moment."
