Mount Walker

Mount Walker Professional Review and Guide

"Hovering over the glacial trough known as Hood Canal, Mount Walker is the easternmost peak in the Olympic Mountains. From its two summits you can gaze out over the Puget lowlands to the Seattle skyline or cast your eyes westward to jagged, mighty Mount Constance. In May and June, rhododendrons transform Walker into a purple mountain majesty.

By June, vibrant violet bell-shaped blossoms ring throughout the emerald forest. Mount Walker is one of the best places in the state to witness this floral show. If you can’t come for the blossoms, Mount Walker also makes for a great winter hike. With the summit road closed, you won’t have to worry about sharing those far-flung Puget Sound views."

Lower half of trail was damp and cool. Upper half of trail still had a bit of snow. Snow was falling off the trees in small chunks like hail. Wonderful hike.

This hike is not technically difficult. It is just brutally steep. The hike is an out and back. 100% up hill on the way up and 100% downhill coming back. The view from the top is impressive, though limited by trees and growth. Mostly the view is to the northwest over the valley. There is one very small view of Hood Canal on the hike. You can also drive to the top for the view. Even with the drive up option the viewpoint and trail were not crowed (I saw 5 people on my hike).
