Haul Out at High Tide Harbor Seal Pupping in Hood Canal

Haul Out at High Tide: Harbor Seal Pupping in Hood Canal Professional Review and Guide

"Harbor seals in Hood Canal and Puget Sound spend most of each day in the water feeding except during their annual pupping and molting seasons, when they are hauled out and highly visible much of the time. At low tide, seals can be viewed from Marrowstone Island.

Drive to Fort Flagler State Park, then west to the boat launch area (rest rooms, picnic tables). Walk south on the spit; on sunny days several hundred harbor seals often haul out on Rat Island (visible only at low tide) west of Indian Island. Scan the waters for grebes, seabirds, and ducks—and occasional rafts of loons. Bald eagles and great blue herons nest here."
