Foothills Trail Ride

Foothills Trail Ride Professional Review and Guide

"One look at the modern reincarnations of train station platforms at the East Puyallup Trailhead and you immediately realize that the Foothills Trail through northern Pierce County is a rail trail.

This paved, 12-foot-wide trail follows a historic route of the Northern Pacific Railroad, which today has become the BNSF Railway. It starts at a point just east of Puyallup for a bicycle-friendly altitude gain of less than 400 feet over the 15 miles to South Prairie."

"The foothills of Mount Rainier and the southern Cascades, green valleys, rivers, creeks, eagles and salmon, small happy towns, and families at play—this is the Foothills Trail. The community created this trail and the community enjoys it. Mount Rainier towers above at such close range that you can almost feel its 14,000 feet of rock, glaciers, and snowfields."

"A leisurely spin on the Foothills Trail offers a scenic ride through wooded countryside and along a rushing river, skirting small towns and new subdivisions on a trail that gently rises toward the pinnacle of Washington attractions: Mount Rainier. In fact, the trail is a crucial link in getting cyclists to the challenging roads encircling “the Mountain.”

The route is a popular destination for Tacoma cyclists looking for a laid-back outing. Developers call it the “Foothills Trail Linear Park,” but before its rails-to-trails reincarnation, it was known as the Buckley Line, hosting both Northern Paci?c freight and a passenger train from Orting to South Prairie, the current southern terminus of the trail."
