Port Angeles, WA Professional Review and Guide

"Port Angeles is a shortening of the original name, for which we all can be thankful. In 1791 Spanish explorer Lieutenant Francisco Eliza named the natural harbor Porto de Neustra Senora de los Angeles, or “Port of Our Lady of Angels.” Subsequently, the name was shortened to Porto de los Angeles and ultimately to its present form. Meanwhile, the city has grown to become the largest on the north Olympic Peninsula. The climate is pleasant, and the rainfall is relatively low.

The Olympic Mountains are only a few miles south, and the Strait of Juan de Fuca laps at the city’s northern limits. Naturally, opportunities for outdoor recreation abound. The city is also emerging as the cultural center of the area. It supports an excellent historical museum and a fine-arts center. It has its own symphony orchestra, light opera company, and a theater group that offers a year-round program. Although the waterfront area is heavily industrialized, improvements in recent years have made it kinder to the eye."
